Monthly income

Monthly expenses

Worked example

Take a monthly take-home pay of £2,400 and three groups of costs: housing £900, bills £350, and food and travel £500.

Total income£2,400.00
Total expenses£1,750.00
Remaining this month£650.00
Daily equivalent (£650 divided by 30)£21.67
Income left27.1%

Before treating the £650 as spare, add a monthly share of annual costs such as car insurance, TV licence or birthdays. Then check what is safe to spend before payday.

Build a budget around real numbers

Start with reliable take-home income, then add essential bills, everyday spending, debt repayments and planned saving. If your income changes each month, use a cautious figure rather than your best month. Not sure of your take-home pay? Use the take-home pay calculator first.

Budget planner FAQ

How do I make a monthly budget?

Start with the money you actually receive each month after tax. List fixed bills, then everyday spending, debt repayments and saving. What remains is your flexible money. If the total is negative, reduce costs or adjust saving until the plan balances.

What should I include in a budget planner?

Include rent or mortgage, council tax, energy, water, phone and broadband, insurance, travel, food, debt repayments, subscriptions and saving. Divide annual or irregular costs, such as car tax or Christmas, by 12 and add them as monthly amounts.

How does the 50/30/20 rule work?

It splits take-home pay into 50% for needs, 30% for wants and 20% for savings and extra debt repayments. It is a starting point rather than a rule, and many people in high-rent areas need a different split.

Does the budget planner save my figures?

Only if you turn on Save in this browser. Your figures are then kept in this browser on this device and are never sent to Headway. Download PDF also creates the file on your device.
