Worked example
Take a monthly take-home pay of £2,400 and three groups of costs: housing £900, bills £350, and food and travel £500.
| Total income | £2,400.00 |
|---|---|
| Total expenses | £1,750.00 |
| Remaining this month | £650.00 |
| Daily equivalent (£650 divided by 30) | £21.67 |
| Income left | 27.1% |
Before treating the £650 as spare, add a monthly share of annual costs such as car insurance, TV licence or birthdays. Then check what is safe to spend before payday.
Build a budget around real numbers
Start with reliable take-home income, then add essential bills, everyday spending, debt repayments and planned saving. If your income changes each month, use a cautious figure rather than your best month. Not sure of your take-home pay? Use the take-home pay calculator first.
