Headway guide

Private budget apps: what happens to your money data?

A private budget app should explain where your records live, what leaves your device and which features are optional. Headway stores budgeting records on your iPhone and requires neither a Headway account nor a bank connection.

What does private budgeting mean in Headway?

You choose the accounts, balances, transactions and plans to record. Headway’s normal budgeting flow does not send readable financial records to a Headway server. That means you can make a plan without giving Headway online-banking credentials or creating a separate login.

Headway keeps a manual spending plan together on the Focus screen.

Does no login mean no external processing?

No. Privacy depends on each feature, not only whether an app has a login. Voice recognition may use Apple processing when on-device recognition is unavailable. Optional merchant artwork requests a public merchant domain from a logo provider. These details belong in a clear privacy policy, not behind a vague promise that nothing ever leaves the phone.

Can I view my budget in a browser?

Headway Web Session is optional. You approve a one-time QR connection on the phone, and the app encrypts a read-only snapshot for that browser. The relay handles encrypted data and connection details; a session expires after ten minutes. Anyone allowed to view the browser can see the shared snapshot while it is open, so only approve a device you trust.

What about backups and Face ID?

Device or iCloud backups follow your Apple Account settings. A device backup is different from a Headway cloud account. Face ID or the device passcode can protect access to the app, but it is still important to secure the phone and any backup account. Apple Platform Security explains the system protections available on Apple devices.

A checklist for choosing a private budget app

  • Can you use it without a bank connection?
  • Does the policy name the storage location and external processors?
  • Are optional features explained when you enable them?
  • Can you delete or export your own records?
  • Does the store privacy label agree with the policy?
  • Are backup, sharing and browser sessions described separately?

Who will prefer a different approach?

A bank-connected service may suit someone who values automatic imports more than manual control. A household that needs a continuously shared budget should check collaboration support before choosing. Headway’s temporary browser snapshot is not continuous multi-user editing.

How this guide was prepared

This guide is written by Headway’s maker, Nathan James, using the current app’s storage and feature behaviour and its published policy. It is a product explanation, not an independent certification. Review the full Headway privacy policy for the current services and limits.
