Headway guide

Headway vs YNAB: which budgeting approach fits you?

Choose Headway if you want an iPhone spending plan without a required account or bank link. Consider YNAB if you want its established method, education and a broader shared budgeting service. The right choice depends on how you will keep the plan current.

Written by Headway’s maker. Headway behaviour was checked against its 1.0 implementation; YNAB information was checked against its official pricing page on 17 October 2026. This is a documentation comparison, not a hands-on YNAB benchmark.

How does each approach affect a daily decision?

Imagine you have £1,200 before the next payday. In Headway, you reserve upcoming commitments and a buffer, then use the remaining flexible pot as a daily guide. In a category-based plan, you decide what the available money must cover across categories before making a purchase. Both require accurate entries and realistic priorities.

Safe-to-spend example: £1,200 available minus £600 bills, £150 buffer and £100 goal contribution leaves £350, or £25 a day for 14 days.

When is YNAB the better fit?

YNAB is worth considering if you want to learn its method, use its educational resources and manage a plan through web and mobile apps. Confirm support for the institutions and region you need before relying on direct import. A manual-first workflow and an import-supported workflow require different habits.

How do privacy and sharing differ?

Headway’s core records live on the phone and it does not require an account. Its optional Web Session shares an encrypted snapshot for ten minutes. YNAB provides an account-based service, so review its current policy and sharing options against your household’s requirements. An account model alone does not prove that a product is secure or insecure.

What should you compare in the price?

YNAB’s official pricing page lists $109 USD per year or $14.99 USD monthly, before applicable tax, and a 34-day trial. Prices, exchange rates and store billing can differ by region. Headway 1.0 has no active purchase; do not use the previously planned £12 annual figure as a current offer.

A practical way to decide

Try maintaining a plan for one full pay cycle. Add a normal purchase, a recurring bill and a goal, then check whether you understand the money left over. Choose the workflow you can reliably maintain. Neither app can make an incomplete record into a dependable forecast.
